Of course, when it comes to killer Christmas lights, not all neighborhoods are created equal. If you’re in the market to see the best of the best, then be sure to check out one of the following neighborhoods—the residents in these ‘hoods do not mess around when it comes to twinkly festive flair.

The group of homeowners on Lubao and Oxnard in Woodland Hills come together each year in a friendly competition to create the best Christmas light displays. The result is true holiday magic. It officially begins on the second Saturday of December and runs until the end of the year, so be sure to check it out before the year’s end.

San Diego: Carmel Mountain Ranch

If you find yourself in San Diego during the month of December, then set aside an evening to check out Fairway Village in Carmel Mountain Ranch. Each year, more than 80 residences deck out their homes for the holidays, offering anyone who drives by a twinkling treat for the eyes.

San Francisco Bay Area: Widmer World - Pleasanton

The annual tradition of setting up gorgeous light displays in Pleasanton began in 1980 with a plastic Santa and has evolved into a truly spectacular, acre-long stretch of holiday goodness. Featuring a Christmas village, computer-animated shows, and all kinds of other magical displays, you definitely don’t want to miss this annual neighborhood show.

Palm Springs: Robolights

For a Christmas light display unlike anything you’ve ever seen before, be sure to check out Robolights in Palm Springs. Located on 1077 E Granvia Valmonte, Robolights is part sustainable art, part robot and alien, and part Christmas magic. Artist, Kenny Irwin, has been creating the display of largely found and recycled objects for 32 years, and it’s evolved into the largest private residential Christmas light display in the United States.

Miami: North Miami - 137th Terrace

For decades, neighbors on 137th Terrace, just east of Northeast 16th Ave., have come together to create a gorgeous stretch of residential holiday lights not to be missed. And if you check it out close to Christmas, be sure to bring the little ones—Santa has been known to make appearances during the week before Christmas.

Palm Beach: Hoffman’s Chocolates’ Winter Wonderland

Every year for almost 30 years, Hoffman’s Chocolates creates a gorgeous display of over 125,000 lights for its Winter Wonderland event. Orange County: South Orange County - Lake Forest
