On Wednesday we brought you the ultimate list of Black Friday deals in our Nook Neighborhoods. Although we appreciate the prestige and economic boost that a high-end shopping center brings to an area, the life and blood of our favorite places is found in the Mom and Pops, the small business.
Even a large company like American Express understands the importance of small businesses, and that is why they started Small Business Saturday in 2010. During the recession, American Express saw how much the state of the economy hurt small businesses. In just two years, all 50 states participated in the initiative that is not a holiday shopping tradition.
The slogan is Shop Small, and it is meant to shine a focus on gifts you can give that mean as much to the person you’re buying it from as the person who’ll receive it. Explore the Shop Small Map to see where you can participate in your neighborhood. Here are some of our favorites from the Nook Neighborhoods!
The Bay Area
You could spend the whole holiday season shopping small in The Bay Area, between The Mission District, Oakland, and nearby Mill Valley. Some of our favorites include Embellish Marin for jewelry and home goods, The Pirate Store at 826 Valencia for that themed room in your nook, and B Street Books will round out your library with some collectibles.
There’s no shortage of holiday activities here, and Small Business Saturday is the perfect time to visit The OC Mix in Costa Mesa. Highlights for your home decoration or renovation include Room & Board, the Asian-influenced Uni Home Store, or find styling window treatments with the family run Shade Store.
Los Angeles & Long Beach
Between all the nonprofits, small theaters and downtown art galleries, Los Angeles is perfect for this new holiday. We found some great local shops where you can discover unique gifts for that person on your shopping list who has everything, among them: Gold Bug, Kaleidoscope kollective, Lula Mae and Greigh Goods.
Carlsbad Village is your place to find great art and performance on this day. Not only will they have live music from 11am-6pm on Small Business Saturday, but you can enjoy Arrakis Art, Monica Martin Fine Art, Carlos Primo Wave Art, Lynn Forbes Sculpture and the Front Porch Gallery, all within walking distance!
There is a haven of small businesses in Santa Barbara, and delicious stops along the way that also help the local entrepreneur. Try Handlebar Coffee, C’est Cheese and Plum Goods, or McConnell’s Fine Ice Cream and Rori’s Artisanal Creamery. You can also enjoy 15% off August Ridge Vineyards on Saturday only!
“Meet the Block” is a special event hosted by the Miami Downtown Development Society that brings together local retailers and residents with a Global Pop-Up Bazaar. They’ll have cool deals for everyone and information sessions on starting a small business or growing your current one with their Business Concierge Antoine Williams.
We love the feeling that small businesses bring to the holiday shopping season. Contact one of our Nook Neighborhood Experts or Search With Style® to find the best Mom and Pop stores near great homes.
