Modernism Week is an annual Palm Springs event that takes place every February to celebrate mid-century modern architecture, design, fashion, art, and culture. The affair draws thousands of people to its more than 350 events, which include paneled films, lectures, home tours, nightly parties, and a whole lot more for mid-century enthusiasts. The event has become so popular, in fact, that it now features a smaller but no less compelling Fall Preview that gives you a glimpse into what the February event will hold.
Dubbed a “mini-Modernism Week,” this year’s Fall Preview will take place on October 17-20 and features over 50 events that allow you to engage with the beauty of mid-century design. For instance, there’s a Golden Era - Hollywood Homes tour that takes place in old Las Palmas and takes you through the Spanish Colonial and mid-century architecture peppered throughout the neighborhood. Expert docents will share stories about the celebrities, like Elizabeth Taylor and Leonardo DiCaprio, who established homes in the neighborhood during the 2.5-hour tour.
You can also book a tour of the Axiom Desert House by Turkel Design, which debuted at Modernism Week 2019 and is celebrated for its net-zero energy, systems-built prefabricated design. You’ll get to explore the home’s innovative use of materials and indoor/outdoor flow while learning about the future of prefab homes. The house features unique elements like multifunctional furniture systems from Resource Furniture and life-and-slide doors from Marvin Windows, which seamlessly connect the indoors and outdoors.
After you work up a thirst during your tours, you can snag a ticket to the Mid-century Mixology Cocktail Clinic. The mixologists of Mr. Lyon’s Steakhouse will teach you how to make Mad Men-esque cocktails during the two-hour hands-on mixology class. The $62 ticket will get you priceless knowledge and three expertly-crafted drinks, including a pre-made welcome cocktail and two drinks that you’ll mix yourself with your newfound mid-century cocktail expertise.
If you’re lucky enough to live in an original mid-century home or you plan to one day, then you’ll definitely want to check out the Smart Remodeling + How to be a Good Modernist Neighbor panel discussion. The 2.5-hour event features a panel of experts at the Canyon Estates, designed by Charles DuBois, who will discuss how to renovate and remodel mid-century homes while honoring their original design and construction. After the discussion, you’ll enjoy small bites and cocktails before touring two beautiful modernist homes that put the panel’s tips into practice.
And these are just a few of the events that await at the Fall Preview. Events start at 8:30 am and run consistently until 7:00 pm each night, so there are boundless opportunities to celebrate what makes mid-century design so timeless and compelling. Just be sure to get your tickets ASAP—some events are already sold out. You can purchase tickets and learn more about each event at modernismweek.com, and be sure to follow @modernismweek for all of their event updates!
