If you're looking for a truly magical way to spend the holidays, then consider a trip to Leavenworth, Washington. Every December, this snowy mountainous village is illuminated with over 500,000 lights for its annual Christmas Lighting Festival.

The event is truly something to behold. In addition to nearly every tree, home, and surface featuring synchronized twinkle lights, you'll find live music performances of your favorite Christmas songs, sledding in Front Street Park, and a traditional Gluhwein Tent serving up hot-spiced wine and hot cocoa. And to make the experience truly immersive, you'll notice that there are many costumed characters wandering around, working to get everyone in the holiday spirit, including ol' St. Nick himself.

The event takes place every weekend in December leading up to Christmas. And while you'll get to see the lights in all their glory on Fridays, you won't get to witness the ever-popular Lighting Ceremony, which only happens on Saturdays and Sundays at 4:45. With all of its good cheer and pomp and circumstance, the Lighting Ceremony isn't an event you want to miss.

But Leavenworth offers much more than the festival to enjoy the holiday season. Reminiscent of a cozy snowglobe scene, this Bavarian village, nestled against the Cascade Mountains, is brimming with holiday-themed things to do and see beyond the festival.

Whether you're not quite done Christmas shopping or you simply want to treat yourself to something special, be sure to check out the treasure trove of boutiques and galleries this sweet town has to offer. You can head to Posy Handpicked Goods for a thoughtfully-curated selection of small-batch wares, like handmade jewelry, home decor, and luxurious body scrubs. Aptly named, Kris Kringl is another shopping favorite, offering a wide range of unique, beautiful, and fun holiday items year-round.

Once you've worked up an appetite shopping, you can check out the Sausage Garten, which offers a mouth-watering menu of house-made bratwurst, kielbasa, currywurst, Copenhagen street dogs, and Chorizo to warm you up. Meanwhile, the Watershed Cafe serves up a seasonal farm-to-table menu with tasty items like Teriyaki-Roasted Wild King Salmon and Slow-Roasted Kurobuta Porkchop. Once you've satisfied your appetite, you can cozy up in the town's unofficial living room, Icicle Brewing, which offers a delicious selection of craft brew on tap.

Simply put, there is no better way to enjoy the holiday season than by spending some time in the enchanting village of Leavenworth.
