If you love minimal Scandinavian design and hand-crafted artisan goods, then prepare to meet your new favorite furniture collection. This month, IKEA launched Annanstans, a decor and apparel (!) line that blends modern design with artisan craftsmanship.
The line is helmed by designer Martin Bergstrom and features work from artisans in Romania, Thailand, and India. The collection ranges from decorative objects, like wooden mushrooms and banana-fiber baskets, to apparel and accessories, like flowy kaftans and scarves.
What’s particularly cool about the collection is that each item is truly handmade, so no two are exactly the same. It also means that the collection is limited—once the items are gone, that’s it. According to Bergstrom, “Annanstans is a handcrafted and limited collection, which makes every item a bit different… When the products are sold out, they’re sold out. You can’t just go out and buy a new one. I want people to think of their pieces like new friends in their home. Someone you want to take good care of for a long time."
Each of the artisans who collaborated on the project work for one of four of IKEA’s social enterprise partners: Industree and Rangsutra in India, Doi Tung in Thailand, and Mesteshukar Butiq in Romania. These partners are part of IKEA’s Social Entrepreneurs program, which creates jobs for “local artisans in vulnerable communities around the world.”
But the collection isn’t just sustainable and socially conscious—it’s also really beautiful. Equally vibrant and relaxed, the collection blends bold prints and patterns with pared-back, modern designs. Bergstrom said he wanted the collection to be “more like a family than a collection. The items match and they don’t match.” In other words, if you’re looking for a set of cohesive, cookie-cutter decor, then look elsewhere. On the other hand, if you’re in the market for unique, one-off pieces that you can cherish for years to come, then prepare to fall in love.
Of course, like all good designs, they’re much better seen than read about. Below are a few of our favorite pieces from the limited-edition collection.
