It’s hard to keep up with all the fun that you can experience in our nook neighborhoods, but here’s a highlights guide to 2018 festivals:
-
FEB: LA Cookie Con and Sweets Show, Feb 10 & 11, Anaheim Convention Center.
WIth Celebrity TV Chefs, the Founder of My Cupcake Addiction and Nerdy Nummies vlogger in attendance...oh, you don’t care about the celebrities? Where are the cookies, you ask? They’ll be all over the Convention Center: some to taste, some to judge and others to bake on the spot, but all proceeds go to benefit Smile Train and Cookies for Kids Cancer.
-
MARCH: St Patrick’s Day 5K in Redondo Beach, Feb 17, Elena Ave.
All ages start the race at 8am and ages 4-9 join in the Little Leprechaun Run at 9:30am, all to benefit the Redondo Beach Education Foundation.
-
APRIL: Don’t miss Found in Translation: Design in California and Mexico, 1915–1985 @LACMA.
This once in a lifetime exhibit looks at how Spanish Colonial Inspiration, Pre-Hispanic Revivals, Folk Art and Craft Traditions, and Modernism styles formed the cultures and informed the histories of our neighboring countries.
Celebrate the Tustin community and heritage, hosted by the Tustin Area Historical Society. Spend some time seeing why this nook is so beloved. This year's theme is “Shake, Rattle, and Stroll.” You’ll just have to join the fun to see how that theme relates to homes and gardens.
-
JUNE - LA Philharmonic presents the Playboy Jazz Festival at the Hollywood Bowl, June 9-10.
Both superstars and emerging artists of the jazz scene come together under the stars, hosted once again by George Lopez. The full list of outstanding artists is released in February.
-
JULY - The Fillmore Jazz Festival, San Francisco, June 30-July 1.
If you crave jazz but live in the Bay Area, check out the largest free jazz festival on the West Coast, drawing over 100,000 visitors to this unique neighborhood. Local artisans and eateries surround twelve open air stages. A great way to meet your neighbors!
-
AUGUST - Nighttime Zoo @ San Diego Zoo, through Sept. 4, San Diego.
It’s no secret that the Zoo is a huge draw, but during those beautiful summer nights you can enjoy birthday celebrations for the animals every Saturday and stop for a variety of musical entertainment, plus tons of smaller festivities!
-
SEPT - Miami Fashion Film Festival, dates TBD, Miami.
We love how the nook of Miami finds cool ways to connect their community with its surroundings. The Miami Fashion Film Festival is a standout, whose mission is to bring “attention to the historical interdependence between art and fashion and its influences.” They have fashion shows, film screenings and more.
-
OCT - Oktoberfests, an entire month, every nook!
We already listed our favorite Biergartens and celebrations in the nook neighborhoods, and it’s never too early to scout your favorite place so you’re prepared ahead of October. Many Oktoberfest events require tickets or planning and you want to ensure you have the best time - and a designated driver!
-
NOV - San Diego Maker Faire, Oct 7-8, Balboa Park.
Have you ever been to a Maker Faire? There are robots, virtual reality games, woodworkers, engineers, handmade items, panels, workshops, special guests, and best of all, it can be fun for the entire family!
-
DEC - Victorian Christmas in Long Beach, Month of December, Long Beach.
The historic Bembridge House decorates their gorgeous Victorian home extra beautifully for the holidays. Enjoy their opening party on December 3 and tours throughout the entire month, but get your tickets! Limited space is available for adults-only wassails on December 1 and 8th.
