Architecture and Art Are One at Griffin Enright Architects

Written by Cindy Marie Jenkins on Tuesday, January 30th, 2018 at 3:05am.

Welcome to #TastemakerTuesday, where we feature the visionaries in our favorite nooks who are dedicated to building a better community through their talents.

Griffin Enright Architects doesn't waste any chance to make steps towards a better world and to explore new forms. Their mission is to allow “urban context, architecture, and landscape to be experienced in new unanticipated ways,” according to their website. The varied projects you’ll find in their portfolio include schools, high-end residences, mixed-use spaces, commercial, landscape design, universities across the globe and even transcendent installations like Keep Off the Grass! A Planar Landscape Phenomena, which inspects our relationship between people and the earth, and how it changes depending on how we care for one another.

Griffin Enright aims for a better planet visually and sustainably. Their work for Thaxton & Associates Office Building and Retail exemplifies the possibility seen in every project. Mixed-use buildings invigorate a neighborhood like Studio City, seeped in history. That’s why it fits right into this nook, sharing and reflecting glimpses of its surroundings onto itself. Lead by Griffin and John Enright, it’s no wonder the Thaxton & Associates project won Griffin Enright a 2017 award in Architectural Design and Mixed Use Architecture. Nothing about this special space tries to ignore where it stands, whether near an alley, residential area, parking lot, or the gas station on the corner of Moorpark St. Thaxton & Associates stands stately among the busy nook, offering a modern and enjoyable glimpse into how architecture can mold itself into its sense of place while standing at the forefront of new life.

Across Los Angeles, their luxury homes defy gravity, as is the case with the Mandeville Canyon Residence. Nestled into a cul-de-sac, you enter this expansive home’s living space and are made to feel as though it is just one large overhanging porch. The beauty of its immediate landscape melds into a background of canyon and city views juxtaposed with the home’s geometric shapes. Then there’s this Hollywood Hills Residence, with a floorplan opening every room of the house and glorious dual windows that invite passersby into its wonderful surroundings while retaining greatly desired privacy.

It’s their work beyond building, however, that will be Griffin Enright's legacy. SCI-Arc (Southern California Institute of Architecture) enjoys the expertise of Margaret Griffin and Jon Enright in their classrooms. They even spiced up a mobile cafe and kitchen with exciting structures that fuel the whole building with solar energy. This endeavor establishes SCI-Arc, along with Griffin and Enright,  as forward-thinkers, preparing their students to understand the needs of a changing industry.
